Alex Therrien week 7 - "Mountain Waves"
N - A wave in atmospheric winds that forms from wind passing over mountains.
I found this word in Randall Munroe's book How To. It starts off talking about how to jump high, but quickly switches to gliding, and how to gain altitude without any internal power source. Mountain waves are an excellent way to do this, and can even interact with the Polar Night Jet in some case to extend into the stratosphere. This is like what many birds and butterflies do to conserve energy by riding thermals, but much more extreme.
